5 Ways to have fun in your own backyard

Published on Mon Mar 30 2020 in Family

You don’t have to go far to enjoy the great outdoors - there are some great ways to entertain your family in your very own backyard!

Here are five great ways to take advantage of your back garden:

1. Have a picnic at home

There’s something special about dining al fresco, even when you’re at home. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and spread a blanket on the grass for a change of pace. Serving food in your backyard means you can eat almost anything, but sticking to picnic classics can be fun! Think sandwiches or wraps, raw vegetables and dip, and pasta salads.

2. Take up stargazing

Looking to the stars is a pastime that is often overlooked in the age of artificial light. Turn off all the lights (inside and out) and wait about 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to any streetlights in your area. You don’t need an expensive telescope – the naked eye or a pair of binoculars will work fine. Get a star chart or download an astronomy app to help you locate planets, stars and other celestial bodies.

3. Set up a games day

Outdoor games are a fun and easy way to keep guests of all ages entertained! Croquet, backyard cricket and badminton are all classics, along with newer favourites like Finska and giant Jenga. DIY instructions are available online for making games that appeal to kids, teens and adults.

4. Plant a garden

Growing a backyard garden may improve your health twice over: you’ll get exercise maintaining your vegetable patch and be inspired to incorporate your fresh produce into healthy recipes! Gardening can also help reduce your grocery bill, and is generally better for the environment than commercial farming. Kids love digging in the dirt, so recruit the little ones to help with the planting and harvest.

5. Go camping

Sleeping under the stars can be magical, but you don’t have to travel far for the experience. Pitch a tent or roll out sleeping bags in the backyard on a warm night. Play lawn games until the sun goes down, tell spooky stories by torchlight, or simply gaze at the stars!

Stuck inside on a rainy day? Try these fun indoor activities!
