Affordable ways to spruce up your home (when you can't renovate)
Published on Mon Feb 19 2018 in Money
Are you ready for a home makeover? Kiwis are opting to renovate their existing home more and more, adding to this billion-dollar industry.1 However, a major home reno is a big undertaking that can cost homeowners loads of time and money. If you’re not quite ready to commit to a full remodel, there are plenty of ways to upgrade your home with just a little effort and money.
The power of paint
Adding or changing colour around your home may be the simplest and most cost-effective way to update a house. A bright accent wall in the living room or bedrooms can pack a powerful punch, completely changing the feeling of the room.
But you don’t have to stop at the walls. Kitchen cabinets and bathroom tiles can also be painted. This is a quick way to update out-of-date features that may otherwise be in good nick. It can also be much more affordable than a full renovation. Speak with an expert at your local home hardware store for advice on what types of paint you’ll need and how to properly prep the surface you’re painting.
Handles and taps
Updating cabinet hardware can also make a stunning impact. The handles on kitchen and bathroom cabinets in an older home may be outdated, and those in a newer build might be the generic builder option. Replacing these with more contemporary styles can bring a bit of your own personality into the room.
Replacing the taps or mixers on sinks and in showers can also make a big difference for relatively little money. A new finish or more modern look can bring an out-of-style kitchen or bathroom into the 21st century.
Swap out cabinet doors
In some cases, a coat of paint and new cabinet handles just won’t cut it. A full renovation may be out of reach, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re stuck. As long as your cabinets are still solid, you may be able to change just the doors. More ornate designs can be swapped for sleeker styles, or vice versa. This could be a cost-effective way to update a kitchen, bath or built-in shelving in other rooms.
Upgrade your appliances
New appliances can update a kitchen without much hassle. It’s a more expensive option, but typically far less costly than a complete remodel.
Stainless steel finishes can give your kitchen a more contemporary feel. Match any smaller appliances (toaster, kettle, and blender) to larger ones for a more luxe look. If your refrigerator and dishwasher are already the latest models, consider updating an older oven or stovetop. This can help improve the look of the kitchen and your cooking experience!
Accessories and artwork
Ready to add the final touches? Artwork, curtains and other accessories can finish off any room in the house.
The living room and hallways are great places to showcase framed art prints, family photos or canvases. Throw pillows, blankets and rugs can add small pops of colour to a bedroom. Display patterned plates on kitchen shelves, or match colourful cooking utensils with the tea towels, table cloth and napkins.
